The WMEA Board has approved to pilot a second state solo and ensemble contest that would serve 1A/2B/1B schools. 4A/3A/2A schools would continue to qualify for the contest in Ellensburg. Preliminary thought is to locate the new contest in Wenatchee and most likely be held a week earlier than the 4A/3A/2A event. All schools, regardless of size would continue to participate in their region contest as in the past. The change being each region would produce two sets of state qualifiers—those for the 4A/3A/2A contest and those for the 1A/2B/1B contest. The new contest would be subject to our current state contest rules document.
WIAA would have final approval of any changes to our current contest format. In order to prepare for presenting this new contest plan to the WIAA Board, we would appreciate your feedback by answering the following questions. Comments are optional but could be helpful. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeL4qNl8hhGMKC_mdoXadBR6CD-QzMvo8OFPv64c7y3XYI7WQ/viewform Info concerning solo ensemble contests in Kelso have now been posted in the events section.
Happy Monday! I am working to get the contact list and regional performance schedule done, and hope to have both items to send out to our regions teachers by next week.

Ride MAX Light Rail at the Conference Consider staying in any of the three delegate hotels listed as conference hotels. Delegates will receive complimentary MAX Light Rail day passes in their conference packets. This will help you avoid parking issues. The Oregon Convention Center doesn’t have as many parking spaces as there would be cars if all of us drive each day. Enjoy a train ride and avoid Portland traffic! Election Day is Tuesday November 6, 2018 It is so easy to vote here. Please don’t forget. The state mails a ballot, a voter’s pamphlet and pays the postage for you to return your completed ballot. No excuses! Do it while you’re thinking about it! Renew Your Membership at www.nafme.org Have a great week! Adam Happy Monday!
In order to save time and streamline things, my goal is to send a weekly Monday Message with updates from WMEA and to share out any news from our region. If there is anything you would like me to send to the group, feel free to pass it along to me, and I will add it to my Monday announcements. UPCOMING DATES FROM WMEA - Scott Ketron, Executive Director The Oregon Convention Center only has 800 parking spots. We expect 2000+ delegates this year along with all the exhibitors, performers and audiences. Travel Portland will provide 2 Max line day pass tickets per room in the Northwest hotel blocks linked on our website. These tickets will be distributed in the conference registration packets. The Max delivers you right to the front door of the Oregon Convention Center. This is better than parking there. (cheaper too) The hotels also charge a lot for parking. If you can avoid bringing your car the Max gets you where you need to go including the airport and the Amtrak station. (even in the downtown hotels) You may save money by not driving. Be sure to renew your membership before you register. Wanted, Leads on Potential Articles for Voice: Half of our WMEA members are elementary teachers. The elementary classroom is a laboratory full in innovation and there are so many classrooms across our state. If you are aware of a program that is doing things well or has come up with creative ways to teach music we would love to have a feature article about what they are doing. All other curricular areas are welcomed and appreciated as well. Music Matters checks have been distributed. We have come a long way. This year 28 Schools were selected and were funded a total of $125,000. Thanks to Bob Tomberg and Music Aid Northwest for their diligence in passing this legislation and in their continued effort to raise money each year to add to the fund through their Play it Forward Gala. Music Matters License plates are the gift that keeps giving while advocating daily for Music Education. I see one or two plates daily on my 26 mile commute. Small School Contest Survey: We are finalizing our survey questions. Look for a survey to pop into your inboxes in October. Our plan is to report the results of the survey in early 2019 as part of our proposal to the WIAA Board of Directors. The survey is a way for members to tell us, “Yes you are on the right track, or, “No my school would probably not be interested in this contest.” YME: Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity in donating to YME after the summer meetings. WOW! It couldn’t have come on a better year with the Northwest Honor Groups meeting in Portland. Portland is growing leaps and bounds and like Seattle the prices are “growing.” Your support really helps families and students participate who might not have considered it. Look for your names in the January Issue of VOICE if you are new to this. Thank you again! The Value of Membership: Please remind your contacts in our profession that membership in WMEA/NAfME is a great value. On the national level NAfME has been very effective in advocating for Music Education to Congress. They continue to build their relationships on our behalf with organizations like the Country Music Association and Give a Note Foundations which share our values that music is a core subject. Between All-State, conferences and the clock hours service we provide WMEA is one of the marquee MEAs in the United States! Help us keep that way. Invite a friend to join. Proposed 2020 solo and ensemble contest rule changes: WMEA would truly appreciate input. Check out:http://wmea.org/Content/C21/2020RuleChangeProposals.pdf?SecID=887 Deadline October 10th. Meeting Recap: Thank you to everyone who was able to make it out to our regional meeting last week at Spiffy’s. Some great discussions were had regarding our regional events and I am looking forward to the upcoming year! Important announcements from the meeting include: -We will hold 2 middle school bands festivals this year on the same day. One will be up north hosted by John Veltkamp while the other will be hosted at Mt. Solo Middle School. -The Spring meeting on June 3rd will be held at W.F. West instead of Spiffy’s due to the challenge of hosting three separate committee meetings at the same time in one room. Lost Coat: If you lost a coat at the regional meeting last Monday, please let me know as one was found and we would like to get it back to its rightful owner. Updated Contact List: I am continuing to input the updates for our contact list from our meeting last week. Once they are input I will send a draft copy to everyone to confirm that everything is accurate. Elementary Honor Choir: Elementary school teachers, expect an additional email from Dave Walworth regarding Elementary Honor Choir. You may receive two copies of this email (one from me and one from him) to ensure that all eligible schools receive it. Have a great week! Adam Thank you to everyone that attended the meeting.
